Reasons To Use Low Dose Birth Control

When most people hear the words birth control, they immediately think it is a method of prohibiting pregnancies; however, there are other reasons to take low dose birth control pills.

Using the Pill for Birth Control

In a naturally functioning womans body, eggs are produced and released from the ovaries on regularly occurring intervals. When the eggs meet with sperm, fertilization occurs and the combination result is the beginning of a new life. When no eggs are released, the bodies of most women make the assumption that conception has occurred, thereby preventing menstruation from occurring. Birth control pills work through the use of hormones that keep the ovaries from releasing eggs. In some women, however, increased hormones has an adverse affect on their systems, so using one with low dosages of hormones is ideal.

Using the Pill During Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the period in a womans life when her reproductive cycles are winding down in preparation for menopause. During this time, hormone production is dwindling, and as result, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, irregular periods and bone loss is experienced. Women who take very low dosages of hormones through the birth control pill will find these symptoms to be relieved, since the pill is replacing the hormones her body made previously. Taking the ultra low dose also offers an additional benefit as a protection against ovarian and uterine cancers.

Using the Pill for Convenience

For many years, it was believed that women needed to menstruate, so most birth control cycles consisted of taking a hormone for 21 days, then a placebo for 7 days during which time menstruation occurred. Now, however, research shows it to be perfectly safe for women to not menstruate for up to a year at time. Low dose birth control pills taken daily throughout the year allows this change to be made; enabling women to enjoy the lack of cramps, monthly periods and other uncomfortable symptoms. This can be particularly beneficial when a trip is anticipated that will coincide with the monthly cycle, as well.

Birth control pills are certainly a valuable tool for prohibiting unwanted pregnancies, but the low dose varieties have other uses as well. Anyone who is contemplating taking the birth control pill for any of these reasons only needs to make an appointment with her physician to discuss the details and see if the low dose birth control pill is a good choice for them.
